Here’s the Box Breakdown
Our first look at the contents of our March Spice Breeze package
The spices that were included in the March package. We love how they changed the packaging… it’s a little glossier.
So what is all this stuff?
Our box inserts. One details changes to the Quad subscription that allow you to choose your menu. The other details each of this month’s recipe. This is a new addition and we really like that they added this!
Our first recipe is Moussaka a la Kleftiko. A mix of two traditional Greek recipes and made with lamb. Traditional Moussaka is a casserole but this uses parchment paper for a faster and easier cooking experience.
Our spice packet for this recipe includes; black pepper, thyme, cinnamon and bay leaves.
Mastic is a versatile spice that can enhance any dish. With it’s pine like flavor – a little bit goes a long way. This recipe kit came with 4 different recipe options – create a mastic dressing for salads, reheat with a firm vegetable like broccoli, fry with cardamom and ground meat or make a rice dish that uses a mastic cream sauce. We haven’t tried this yet but are kind of excited to use it in a rice dish
There are just 2 spices necessary for this recipe packet.. our mastic tears and cardamom pods.
This honestly looked the most delicious to us but it’s not a dish that we can serve for the kids… because… well kids. This is a traditional recipe served for Nowruz – the Persian New Year
Our spice packet includes; turmeric, rosebud, black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, mace and cardamom
Our final recipe is a hearty soup made with Hungarian Paprika. As Hungary’s national dish this stew is typically made with beef while this one is made with sausage to save preparation time.
Because this seemed universally pleasing with it’s notes of; Hungarian Paprika, marjoram, black pepper and bay leaves. This was the recipe we decided to make for this month
Okay so what next?
First we heat up 2 tablespoons of oil in a large pot
Then we add 2 onions
As well as 1 pound of sausage cut into 1 inch slices
And 1 bell pepper cut into 1 inch pieces
Cook this until onions are transluscent and peppers are slightly browned
Add our Gulyas spices
And then our 32 ounces of beef broth and cubed potatoes. Cover and bring to boil – continue to cook for 10 minutes
Our final step is to add 3 tablespoons of tomato paste and cook for five minutes
An optional part of this recipe was to create a bread bowl from a round bread. All you have to do is cut off the top and scoop out the insides. If you are worried about waste… never fear you can use the bread from inside the loaf to dip in your soup (the kids really liked that).
Our result was a deliciously complex flavor that was hearty and filling. We love how simple it was to make but still was beautiful to see in the loaf of bread!
So in summary
We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation and presentation. The Spice Breeze Subscription is a great way to enhance your kitchen skills as well as familiarize yourself with flavors from all around the world. The presentation is great. We love how beautiful the spices look inside this package. The quality is amazing. Everything is high grade and organic for superior flavor. And curation is simply excellent. The flavors are varied and give you a dinner to look forward to each week of the month!
