Here’s the Box Breakdown

Everything that we received in our Piquant Post package for this month. There are as usual, 4 recipes with 4 corresponding spice blends. This month features the flavors of Mexico. Also love the new packaging!

So what is all this stuff?

Mexican Adobo Blend

This first blend features Adobo, a traditional Mexican rub. The recipe has us use it to roast a whole chicken. This was our first choice to create because it sounded phenomenal but with the summer months and traveling we didn’t get all the ingredients we needed in time. We still fully intend on making this.

This blend includes; ancho chili, coriander, cumin, fennel seed, mustard, black pepper, paprika, Mexican oregano and ceylon cinnamon.

Chipotle Spice

Our next blend includes a savory blend of flavors, like chipotle peppers which are actually jalapenos that have been dried and smoked. Our recipes is for a Mexican Sopa which is a hearty stew that’s been cooked for hours and can be found served by vendors all around Mexico.

This blend includes; chipotle pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, sage, cumin, Mexican oregano, marjoram, porcini mushroom and black pepper.

Mexican Mole Blend

While Mole Poblano is one of the most well known Mexican dishes it’s roots take you back to pre-Columbian Nahuatl Indian recipes. We love mole because the chocolate makes it a huge hit with the kids and this recipe also incorporates raisins as well as pepitas.

This blend includes; ancho chili, pasilla chili, cocoa powder, white sesame seed, chipotle pepper, ceylon cinnamon, cloves, Mexican oregano, cumin, coriander, black pepper and paprika.

Taco Elixir Spice

We’re a Taco Tuesday family and when we first saw a taco recipe we kind of wanted to opt for one of the more exotic recipes included in this package. After giving it some thought though, we decided to shake up our taco tradition with Piquant Post’s taco recipe and their Taco Elixir Spice Blend!

This mix includes; guajillo chili, ancho chili, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, Mexican oregano, coriander, allspice, cloves and cayenne pepper.

Tacos are pretty simple- they require more prep work than anything else. This recipe includes a pico de gallo recipe along with the taco meat recipe so we started with that. We chop 4 tomoatoes.

This also called for a medium red onion (we didn’t have one on hand so we subbed a white onion).

We then prep and add green onion as well as our serrano chili or jalapeno (depends on how much heat you like), garlic, lime juice, olive oil (we had never added this to our own pico), and cilantro. Also we got the onion pictured above from our co-op and aren’t sure if it’s a green onion or some sort of garlic onion hybrid? After your pico is prepared refrigerate until you are ready to serve.

To prepare the meat we dice an onion.

Add to a pan with oil and saute for 5 minutes.

Then you’ll add your meat, we used chicken.

And also our garlic and taco elixir spice. We noticed this packet was exactly the 3 tablespoons the recipe called for, so that’s an interesting change to this subscription.

Mix all these ingredients together.

Add your broth to the pan and allow to simmer on medium until the broth is absorbed by the meat.

Now you’ll serve the tacos by filling your tortilla with meat and pico and any of your own favorite toppings likes cheese and sour cream.

Here’s our own. We’re trying to avoid carbs so it has no tortilla!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation and presentation. The Piquant Post Subscription is an excellent way to keep you inspired in the kitchen with fun flavors and interesting techniques. The presentation is great, we love their new packaging and everything arrives perfectly. The quality is awesome. Each of these blends is handcrafted and made with quality ingredients. Curation is also fantastic. Each of the recipes works with the blends that have been included for them and all 4 recipes work together to give us a great variety of Mexican cuisine!
