Here’s the Box Breakdown

what's in august piquant post

Everything that we received in our August Piquant Post Package. This month our spice blends take us to Turkey!

So what is all this stuff

Our first recipe is a Menemen Turkish Scramble. This quick dish is as easy as it is flavorful – it boasts just 20 minutes of cooking time (including prep). In addition it also boasts a lot of fresh ingredients.

Our spice packet includes just one ingredient, urfa biber chilli peppers. These are a staple seasoning in Turkey and have a complex flavor with notes of chocolate, raisins, wine, salt, tobacco and a mild heat!

Our second recipe for August is a Turkish Quinoa Salad or Kisir (quite similar to tabbouleh). This is a variant on the traditional recipe because many ingredients can’t be found in our own local markets.

Our spice blend contains (sumac) one of our own favorite spices – it’s made from a crushed berry and has a tangy, lemon-y flavor! This spice blend also includes; paprika, aleppo chili flakes, white sesame seed, cumin and allspice.

Next up is Stuffed Eggplant or Imam Bayildi a perfect vegetarian recipe to incorporate into your meatless Monday dishes! If you wish you can always add meat as well… the recipe is completely customize-able!

Our spice packet for this dish includes; dill, mint, garlic, oregano, aleppo chili flakes, cumin and fennel seed.

Our final recipe is for Turkish Kofte with Tzatziki – a meatball made with lamb and a homemade Tzatziki sauce to dip them in!

Our spice blend for this recipe includes; nigella seed, cumin, pasilla chili, sumac, mustard, red pepper flakes, cinnamon, mace, cardamom and star anise. We love sumac and knew we wanted to make one of the recipes that included it this month, so we decided on this one.

Our first step is a bit of prep. We mince our garlic and finely dice our onion.

We couldn’t find lamb so we just used ground beef (you add a pound).

Then we add salt, pepper, parsley and our sweet nigella blend.

Then thoroughly mix it together.

Roll the mixture into golf ball sized balls and saute for about six minutes turning every couple minutes to brown each side. We cooked them in batches so we didn’t overcrowd the pan.

While our meatballs were cooking we started creating our Tzatziki. First we remove the seeds of one cucumber (we used and English cucumber because they didn’t specify) using a spoon.

Grate your cucumber then strain with a mesh colander. PRO TIP – if you don’t have a mesh colander use a flour sack towel… that’s what we’re using in this image.

You’ll be left with something like this.

From here you’ll add your yogurt, mint, salt and pepper and voila!

Serve your Kofte with toothpicks topped with Tzatziki!

So in summary

Presentation: Everything arrived to us from Piquant Post perfectly

Quality: We love that they come up with their own blends and customize them for each recipe that they include. There’s so much attention to the flavors and the quality of spices!

Curation: This is one of our favorite packages in a long time, we love Sumac and really enjoy the flavors of Turkey all around!
