misfits market review

Misfits Market is a weekly or bi-weekly ugly produce subscription box. Boxes from Misfits Market includes a seasonal selection of organic fruits and vegetables that don’t quite fit the bill of what’s acceptable at the grocery store, most often though everything looks absolutely fine. There are two different packages to choose from; the “Mischief” Box that includes ten to thirteen pounds of produce and costs $22 and there is also the “Madness” Box (what I’m reviewing today) that includes 18-22 pounds of produce and costs $35. Shipping varies and is calculated at checkout. Currently Misfits Market delivers to: PA, NY, NJ, CT, DE, MA, VT, NH, RI, ME, OH, WV, WDC, VA, MD, NC, SC, IL, IN and KT. Get 25% OFF your first box using our referral link. NAT pays for this subscription.

Here’s everything that I received in my package from Misfits Market for the week. They do not send you a sheet with the items in your box. You can look up what was rescued that week on their site and parse through to see what you received. The Mischief Box includes less variety than the Madness Box and each package comes with a recipe. It’s also important to note that all the packaging Misfits Market uses is biodegradable and earth friendly.

So what is all this stuff?

This week’s box was probably my favorite in a while. There were so many delicious items included and a good mix of both fruits and veggies. The first fruit in this package are these six Pink Cripps apples. I’ve never had this variety but they are beautiful and look similar to a Gala apple.

We also received six Bosc Pears. My husband loves pears and is always really excited when we get them. When pears come into season it’s always a sign that fall is here!

I received four red bell peppers in my box as well. These are bright and beautiful and are always great to get because they are so versatile. I make salads out of these for lunch or add them to omelets in the morning or throw them into the ground beef for Taco Tuesday!

Next up we have four yellow squash. We cook these just like we would zucchini and most often we put them in foil packets and throw them on the grill. We actually made these last night in that same fashion and tried something different, one pack we made for the kids and just added salt, pepper, garlic and olive oil and the other we made for ourselves and used the same mixture but added ginger and it was an absolute beautiful marriage of flavors. I don’t think I’ll ever eat them differently again!

Speaking of ginger we received two large pieces of it! I LOVE ginger and I try to find ways to incorporate it into many of my dishes. I also really love that it keeps for a long time whereas many other herbs and spices (fresh obviously) don’t.

Ah it’s squash season and that makes me so happy! I received two medium sized spaghetti squash. These are so tasty and I only found out about them because I subscribe to Misfits Market! We halve these and roast them in the oven, once them come out you can just use a fork to scoop the insides out and you aren’t going to believe this but it looks like… spaghetti.

Can’t believe cucumbers are still in season but hey I’ll take it. This is another veggie that I like to incorporate into my lunches. Typically I just chop it up, add a little garlic, sumac and white wine vinegar and voila I have a tasty little mixture and it’s super healthy.

We seriously can’t get enough lemons in my house. My kids love to eat them and they’re super useful in dishes like chicken piccatta which we have about once or twice a month. I can see why these were labeled “misfits” but as we all know it’s what’s inside that counts and these tasted exactly like a lemon should!

Next we have one bunch of rainbow chard. This isn’t quite enough for one meal for my whole family but we do love chard in this house! Usually we saute this up with some garlic and onion in a pan with a little olive oil and it’s perfection!

Next we have a pint of blackberries. These are delicious and I’ve never received them in any of my boxes from Misfits Market before. They did leak all over the box so if you see some purple juice in the photos… you know where it came from.

Something that Misfits Market does that I like is they’ll double up on many of the items that they include in your box. Take for instance these green beans, one bag wouldn’t be enough to feed my entire family but two bags is perfect!

Acorn squash is another vegetable that I only really tried because of this box. It’s delicious and very healthy! There were two included in my box for this week.

These two potatoes are GIGANTIC. I have no idea what kind this is, but they’ll be feeding us for a couple days at the very least.

The final item in our Misfits Market Box for this week are these four sweet potatoes. This is a great inclusion for a couple reasons. Firstly, if sweet potatoes aren’t the most fall-esque food variety I don’t know what is and secondly my darling husband is trying to eat healthier and that means not eating processed starches like rice – so he is trying to incorporate sweet potatoes despite disliking sweet potatoes. It actually kind of makes me laugh.

So in summary

Presentation: While I understand the items in this box are Misfits everything arrived to us perfectly in this box.

Quality: I love that the items that they include are organic and come from small farms.

Curation: This is the best assortment that I’ve received in quite a while. I thought this box game me a lot of fall vibes.
