Our first glimpse inside the box from MEL Science. After you get your starter kit each month you’ll receive a box like this.

Okay so what is all this stuff?
This “Artificial Sea” themed box includes two different projects. The Chemical Jellyfish experiment and the Chemical Seaweed experiment.
The cards for each experiment include instructions on how to complete each step with images
This Chemical Seaweed project takes a bit of time since we need to let our seaweed “grow”
The Chemical Jellyfish project doesn’t take quite a slong.
In fact we’ll be able to complete this while we wait for our seaweed.
These four chemicals will be used to create our Chemical Seaweed. There’s K4[Fe(CN)6], CuSO4, ZnSO4, FeCl3.
We also received two bottles of Liquid Glass to use in our Petri Dish for our Chemical Jellyfish project.
The chemicals we’ll need to create our Chemical Jellyfish are packaged separately which makes find them and using them quite simple. Included are FeCl3, CuSO4, MnSO4, and FeSO4
There’s also two pairs of gloves included, a small and a large pair.
In addition to a petri dish I also received two small spoons to measure chemicals and a paper clip to help open bottles.
There were also two wooden sticks included as well.
There’s also a fold out page with instructions on how to complete your project included as well.
Okay so now what?
Now we experiment!
First we add water to our beaker.
Then we’ll add two large spoonfuls of K4[Fe(CN)6]
Then you’ll stir that with a wooden stick.
Then you’ll add a small amount of the CuSO4 crystals to one spot in your beaker.
You’ll also add a small amount of ZnSO4 to another spot in the beaker. At this point you’ll let the beaker sit for 20-30 minutes.
In the meantime we start our Chemical Jellyfish project by first pouring two bottles of Liquid Glass into a petri dish.
We’ll add drops of each of our chemicals throughout the petri dish. As you can see here this is FeCl3
Here you can see the other chemicals combined with our petri dish, there’s CuSO4, MnSO4 and FeSO4. Quite colorful!
Then we let our “jellyfish” sit for three minutes (there’s a timer on the MEL Science app).

For fun we add some FeCl4 to the beaker to add color and interest!
So in summary
Presentation: Everything was packaged well and arrived to me perfectly in my kit from MEL Science
Quality: I love the experiments, they are themed, fun and educational!
Curation: I thought this artificial sea themed box was excellent!
