Our first glimpse inside the Matter Subscription Box.
Everything that we received in our Matter Subscription Box. There are 6 really cool items included!
So what is all this stuff?
Mycelium Foam
The packing material of the future, Mycelium is a self assembling, mushroom based foam used for shipping, furniture and also for insulation as well as building materials. 100% compostable and renewable Mycelium uses the root structure of mushrooms to bind together agricultural waste like corn husks and wood shavings.
We received a formed piece of Mycelium Foam as well as a bag that we can mix with water and flour to create our own. Mycelium is already being used by companies like Dell and Ikea.
Kapton Tape
Next up in our package is Kapton Tape which is a specialty film that can withstand extremely low temperatures (think 4 Kelvin) and ultra high vaccuums. Because of these properties this tape is ideal for cryogenics and for use in space.
Developed in the 1960’s Kapton is self extinguishing and can be seen in the photos of the Apollo Lunar Module on the moon. This tape is a Polyimide which is an extremely strong grouping of molecules.
3D Printing
Then we have something we’ve all heard about and seen videos of but maybe haven’t seen it implemented in real life. Here is a 3D printed item from Aleph Objects who manufactures the top rated Lulzbot printers this little guy is a gauge to show the different capabilities of these machines.
This is the future guys… right here, we’re looking at it. If you look very closely at this item you can see the layers of molten plastic used to create this (which is how 3D printing works).
Enchodus Tooth
Quite possibly the coolest item that came in this box is the tooth of a creature who lived somewhere between 112 and 37 million years ago. The Enchodus was a carnivore who grew up to five feet and was known for it’s large, fang like, teeth.
This fish is closely related to modern trout and salmon and fossils of it have been found worldwide.
Kyanite
The final item in our MATTER Subscription Box is Kyanite a blue crystal that has the ability to transform into other minerals at different temperatures and pressures which makes it an indexing tool and a great way to see what an area was like.
We love crystals and think that Kyanite is quite beautiful!

Curation: This assortment is super cool. We personally love the fossils and crystals but it was really interesting learning about the tape and mycelium foam!
