My first glimpse inside the Spice Breeze for May.

meal delivery subscription boxes

Everything that came in my May package. This looked and smelled amazing! I love opening this up each month. The spices always looks so beautiful in there!

So what is all this stuff?

This month our box is taking us to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula! I love that along with recipes and spices from the location that we are journeying to in our package we also receive information and photos about the location as well. It serves as a reference for where the recipes may have come from or originated.

tacos al pastor

The first recipe in my package for the month is Tacos Al Pastor. This is a Mexican dish and keeps with the theme for the month. Al Pastor Tacos are a popular Mexican street food that are a take on Shawarma. Meat is thinly sliced from a rotisserie, served on local bread and topped with both pineapple and chili adobo paste.

There was one packet included for this recipe that included annatto, ancho chili, pasilla chili, cumin, allspice, oregano and cloves.

shukto

Next up in my package is Shukto, a Bengali dish that blends bitter and sugar. Panch Phoron blend is a take on this dish with a traditional Bengali five spice. The best part about this recipe is that it’s vegetarian but can easily be made for omnivores as well! Another thing I love about this subscription is that you’ll receive several “difficulty” levels in your dishes. So there is something for busy weeknights as well as for Sunday dinners.

This kit included 2 packets – the first contained panch pheron ( cumin, fennel, fenugreek, brown and yellow mustard and nigella) and the second has yellow and brown mustard, ajowan and bay leaves. My AC is currently out so I am saving this dish for later in the month!

ochazuke with furikake

Next is a kit from Japan. For this dish you’ll submerge rice in green tea and is served in a one bowl sort of dish that you can customize however you’d like. This dish requires salmon which I didn’t have on hand when I was selecting the dish I’d make, so I’ll be serving this for later date.

There was one packet included for this recipe. It included toasted white and black sesame seeds and roasted seaweed. That’s it!

Our packets from Spice Breeze also frequently include bonus spices. These can be used as table seasonings, in dressings and dips and just to sprinkle on food. This month there was zesty chili lime spice which combines; sugar, chili, salt, paprika and lime.

shakshuka

The final recipe in my package and the one that I made for the month is Shakshuka, an Israeli dish that may have originated in Turkey, Spain or Tunisia. However Israel popularized the poached eggs on top which is how the world recognizes this dish. This is a stew that is made flavorful with the addition of Maresh peppers.

Our spice packet includes cumin, paprika and marash pepper flakes.

First we add our diced bell peppers to a pan and cook for about 10 minutes.

I also decided to add some onion as well.

After that fries down a bit we add our garlic, Shakshuka spices as well as our salt and pepper. We’ll stir fry this for 2 minutes.

Now you’ll add your tomatoes, tomato past and salt and pepper and mix to combine. Instead of tomato past in this recipe I used a savory tomato spread from Israel (Lin’s Farm brand) to add a little bit of depth of flavor

Now you’ll cover and set your heat to low and allow to cook for about ten more minutes.

Once you’ve done that you’ll use a spoon to create a little well in your tomato mixture. Then you’ll crack an egg into each well. I decided to make four eggs.

While I’ve had dishes made with poached eggs this way I’ve never made one myself so this was a really fun experience.

It was really fun to see this come together as this is such a bright and beautiful dish!

Here it is plated and whew is it pretty and delicious. The recipe calls to serve this with pita or flatbread but I was working with what I had – and since I made this for a fancy breakfast I served it with buttermilk biscuits. Everyone in my household really enjoyed this and the addition of the Maresh Pepper really does add an extra level of flavor!

So in summary

Presentation: Everything looks amazing and smells amazing when it arrives to us in our package from Spice Breeze. I love the way the spices are laid out inside the leaflet

Quality: Something that I love about this subscription is that all the spices are non-gmo and organic which is a huge plus. I also love how much information you receive about each of the dishes that comes in your box each month.

Curation: We get to choose three of the recipes that we receive which I think is a great benefit of this subscription. It’s an excellent way to up your cooking game and you’ll for sure be learning new techniques and improving ones that you may already know. There’s something for every night of the week with Spice Breeze.
