Subscription Box Review
Everything that I received in my Quad package from SpiceBreeze. As always there are four recipes included with all the spices required to create them! This month’s destination was Sweden and we received a familiar Swedish dish in our package.
So what is all this stuff?
The box insert that tells us where the package is taking us for the month.
This card tells us about Small Frogs a Swedish Celebration that happens on June 21st.
Espresso BBQ Spice Kit
The first kit in our package is American in origin (something they’ve been doing recently is including more American dishes). This BBQ blend is made with high quality Italian espresso beans and ancho chili that creates aromatic flavor sans bitterness.
The recipe takes thirty minutes hands on and the spice packet includes; ancho chili pepper, onions, espresso beans, black mustard, cinnamon, cumin and chipotle pepper. This sounds great but is more a dish my husband would make, so I’ll be saving this one for him.
Bulgogi Spice Kit
Our next kit is Korean and focuses again on BBQ but a traditional Korean kind that can be enlivened with pickles and kimchi. Bulgogi is something I see on cooking shows often and is definitely something I want to try my hand at so I’m excited that I received this. This recipe requires only thirty minutes of hands on work as well which is pretty cool.
There were two packets included in this kit. The first includes; Shitake mushroom and black pepper and the second includes Korean chili pepper and salt. I didn’t pick this one based on what I had on hand at the time.
Kottbullar Spice Kit
The Kottbullar spice kit is a Swedish dish that you may have had at IKEA. That’s right, those tasty meatballs that are downright comfort food! This is another pretty simple recipe that requires just thirty minutes of hands on activity. This is another dish that sounds like a fun one to make but I think I want to savor that warmth of the mashed potatoes for when it gets a little bit cooler outside!
Our spice packet for this one includes just onion, white pepper, allspice, black pepper, yellow mustard and ginger. I love how Spice Breeze offers so many variations for each of the recipes that they include. For this one you can select your preferred jam, substitute the pickled cucumber salad with another pickled vegetable and you can also substitute the bread crumbs for flour or even ground nuts!
Smoked Sea Salt
This sea salt was included as a bonus. The flavor is smoky and deep and is made with Maine Cherrywood. My husband really liked this and used it when he grilled several times.
Urfa Kebab Spice Kit
Finally we have Urfa Kebab a Turkish kit that was the recipe I decided to make for the month because of it’s use of my favorite spice, sumac as well as what I had on hand in my kitchen. These kebabs are wrapped in bread and served with a Greek yogurt dressing and lettuce!
We received two spice packets for this recipe – the first included just Urfa Biber pepper and the second just Sumac.
Okay so what is next?
Our first order of business is to create the dip by mixing together the Greek yogurt, sumac and lemon juice. This made a lot, I took the leftovers and topped my chicken at lunchtime with it because it is ridiculously tasty!
You’ll end up with something that looks like this.
After you’ve made your dip you’ll move on to making the meat portion of the dish. Finely chop bell pepper, tomato, parsley, garlic and mix with the Urfa Biber pepper and some salt (to taste).
Then you’ll add the meat and knead for at least five to ten minutes. This smells amazing and I knew this dish was going to be a slam dunk with the whole family at this point!
Alright so it was at this point I realized I didn’t have skewers. I totally thought I did but alas there were none. My husband who is a genius in the kitchen had a quick fix and suggested the meatballs instead and it totally worked! If you do make kebabs you just sort of form the meat on the kebab and wrap it in plastic wrap but the meatballs just need to be rounded off which seemed even simpler in my opinion.
Alright here is the part where I disappoint you. I made these delicious meatballs, bought lavash bread and put the dip on it and lettuce as well as these meatballs rolled it up and ate it just so… but forgot to take a picture. I have failed you but I promise it was absolutely scrumptious!
So in summary
Presentation: Everything always looks so pretty when it arrives from Spice Breeze. The presentation of this subscription is excellent!
Quality: Each packet from Spice Breeze is high quality in addition to being organic so the quality is definitely there!
Curation: I felt like this assortment was really well rounded. While you can choose the two packets you receive in this subscription I never do and allow SpiceBreeze to select for me and they always do a great job!
