Goodfood Box (Classic Meals, 2 servings & 3 recipes) Review:

The first time you order from Goodfood you will receive a ‘Welcome to the Good Food Family” information booklet. It gives you some background on the company and how they got their start with the goal of helping people create healthy and nutritious meals with ease. They are also firm believers in making the world a better place through local sourcing, recyclable packaging, reduction of food waste, and education about the above.

Before my order was to be delivered I received an email asking if I would like to be part of a pilot program to reduce the use of the large cardboard box that often comes with any food box. I agreed and when my delivery came to the door the lovely gentleman was waiting for me to collect my paper bags from his reusable bin. If I was not home, he would have left my meals in a box as usual.

Our recipes this week included:

  • Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breasts with Spiced Potatoes & Crunchy Marinated Cucumbers
  • Pan-Seared Salmon with Lemon-Spritzed Lentils & Wilted Greens
  • Empanada-Style Ground Beef Buns with Cilantro Dipping Sauce & Tomato-Pepper Salad

Recipe #1: Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breasts with Spiced Potatoes & Crunchy Marinated Cucumbers

Cooking time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2

As a family, we love meals that are straightforward but have a twist on the norm. This Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breast was just that. It included foods that are common in our house but added a delicious sauce to create a whole new meal.

With a little added chicken breast and potatoes we took this meal from 2 servings to feed our family of 4. A great deal for money-conscious shoppers!

Recipe #2: Pan-Seared Salmon with Lemon-Spritzed Lentils & Wilted Greens

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Servings: 2

There aren’t many meals that are healthy and quick too! Okay, maybe this took us 15 minutes to cook, but that is pretty good for a complete meal from start to finish. There was not much to cook other than the salmon and some light heating for the lentil mixture.

The meal itself was average. Where it fell flat for our family was the lack of flavor. We love spice and full-flavour foods. The canned lentils were very mushy and bland. This was not a meal we would get again.

Recipe #3: Empanada-Style Ground Beef Buns with Cilantro Dipping Sauce & Tomato-Pepper Salad

Cooking Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2

Empanadas in 35 minutes… sign me up! The whole family got involved in the making of this meal and it was delicious! The kids enjoyed pressing the dough and were so proud of their final product. There were very few steps and most of the time was allocated to the cooking in the oven.

I love it when you can take a meal and really stretch the servings to feed a whole family of four. With the amount of dough included we managed to create 4 empanadas.

As an alternative next time, we may try adding some vegetables to the meat mixture. This was definitely one of our favorite Goodfood meals!

Verdict: With food prices soaring, we are always on the lookout for ways to cut costs and feed our family healthy meals on a budget. We don’t often order meal delivery kits but have been known to try them when they offer sales (which they always do for first-time customers – currently you can get a FREE box when you sign up/try the Goodfood company). After having tried almost everyone at least once, we now keep our eyes open for the existing member sales and will sign-up again. But we are quick to cancel after the trial ends. That is the key with meal delivery kits, if you don’t want to pay full price, keep tabs on your weekly subscription. It’s so easy to cancel or even pause the week. I know this is a fear for many people.

We love the variety and choices the Candian Goodfood meal delivery kit has to offer. It spices up our routine (no pun intended… haha) and gives our dinnertime meals a well-needed refresh. The meals are often geared at taking 30 minutes or less, which isn’t much when you think about how long most food takes to cook. We don’t choose meal delivery kits to give us relief from cooking but to give us new, healthy meal options.
